California Guard Card Renewal

Step 1 — Check Your Status

Before anything else, confirm where your card stands. Look it up on the official BSIS/DCA license search and check whether your Security Guard Registration shows as Current or Expired — and note the expiration date. You can also see this by logging into BreEZe.

Step 2 — Find Your Path

Current, or expired 60 days or less — you renew. You can renew directly through BSIS by BreEZe or by mail (see below). If you are past the expiration date but still within 60 days, expect a delinquent fee of $69 instead of the standard $44, and you must have completed your 8 hours of annual continuing education — the renewal application requires you to certify you have.

Expired more than 60 days — you start over. BSIS cancels the registration and it cannot be renewed. You reapply as a brand-new applicant — the same three steps as a first-timer: (1) retake the 8-hour Power to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force course, (2) submit a new application through BreEZe, and (3) complete Live Scan for a new DOJ/FBI background check. How to Renew — BreEZe or Mail

• Online (recommended): renew through BreEZe — it bypasses the Cashiering Office, can cut processing by up to two weeks, and updates in real time.
• By mail: submit the official Security Guard Registration Renewal Application with your fee.
• Timing: submit at least 60 days before expiration. You can renew as early as 120 days before — but not earlier, since applications received more than 120 days out are returned.
• Processing: online renewals typically take about 2–6 weeks; mailed applications take longer.

Continuing Training

To renew, California requires an 8-hour annual continuing education (CE) course every year you hold the card, including at least 2 hours on appropriate use of force (BPC 7583.6, CCR 643). The BSIS renewal application requires you to certify — under penalty of perjury — that you have completed this training, so you must have it done to renew. Keep every certificate; BSIS can ask for proof. This is the course we are working on offering — check back soon.

Fees & Keeping Your Info Current

• On-time renewal $44; delinquent (within 60 days after expiration) $69; replacement pocket card $25 — verify on the official BSIS fee schedule.
• Report address changes to BSIS within 30 days so your renewal notice reaches you about 90 days before expiration.
